Why Canadian TV works differently to American TV

Canada looks like a smaller version of the US market from the outside, and it is not. Broadcast rights are held by different companies, a chunk of the schedule is protected by domestic content rules, and the whole thing runs in two languages. A service built purely for the American market leaves a Canadian viewer missing the half of the listings they actually wanted.

Hockey, and the regional feed problem

NHL coverage here is regionalised. Sportsnet runs separate feeds for different parts of the country, so the game you get in Vancouver is not the game showing in Toronto, and a subscription tied to one region simply blacks out the other. Carrying the regional feeds as separate channels is the only way to follow a team that plays on the wrong side of the country from where you live.

French-language channels are not an afterthought

Around a fifth of the country watches primarily in French, and the French-language sports and news channels carry their own commentary, their own studio shows and sometimes their own fixtures. Treating them as a bolt-on to an English package is how most services get Canada wrong. They are listed here as full channels in their own right.

Winter, distance and why the server matters

Canada is a very large country with a lot of viewers concentrated in a narrow band near the border, which makes distance to the server unusually important. A stream routed through a distant box adds delay that shows up as stutter during fast play, which on hockey is exactly when you notice. Our Canadian traffic is routed to the closest available server rather than pushed south by default.
